"Messing Around in Cars" is a song from the 1983 film The Wind in the Willows; it is a reprise of sorts of Messing Around in Boats. Unlike most musical numbers, this one is divided across separate elements of the film.
Lyrics[]
(The first verse is sung by Toad when he sneaks onto a train heading towards Rolls-Royce headquarters after reading an advertisement for their cars)
- Whether a Ford, or a Ferrari
- Whatever I can get to carry
- Me near or far
- Just get me any car
- I love to ride the tar
- An old Excalibur
- Yes any motor car
- And I'll be happy, ho-ho!
- Messing around in cars
(The second verse is sung by Toad as he drives a car across a frozen lake just before Ratty awakens and begins his search for Mole)
- When I'm messing around in cars
- The world is apple pie
- When I'm messing around in cars
- I'm quite another guy
- When I'm messing around in cars
- When I'm messing around in cars
- I'm in the stars
- When I'm messing around
- Around in cars
(An instrumental bridge appears while Ratty and Mole are at Badger's, showing a montage of Toad wreaking havoc as Mole explains to Badger how many cars Toad as destroyed)
(The third and final verse is sung by Toad as his friends have him locked up in Toad Hall until he has changed his ways, but to no avail)
- Imagine you're cruising down the highway
- With your foot down to the floor
- And you're passing every motorcar in sight
- And the needles pass a hundred
- When you see that winding curve
- And you hit the brakes and hold it
- As you tremble every nerve
- When I'm messing around in cars
- The world is apple pie
- When I'm messing around in cars
- I'm quite another guy
- When I'm messing around in cars
- When I'm messing around in cars
- I'm in the stars
- When I'm messing around
- When I'm messing around
- When I'm messing around
- Around in cars
